Logo Design

Part I:
Think about the products you own, then think about the products you own that have a logo. Think about logos that do not have include text, like Nike. Select one symbol logo that you are fond of and research that logo. Please write a 300 word essay in Microsoft Word about the history of that logo design. Please use the MLA format and cite any sources that you use. The following questions are to help get you started; you may not be able to answer all of them within your essay. You should not use the first person within your essay. Please paste a picture of the logo you are writing about in your essay.
  1. Where did the logo come from?
  2. Who created it?
  3. How was the idea invented?
  4. What year was it created? How old is it?
  5. Does it mean something that you were not aware of?
  6. What inspired it?
  7. Has it changed over time?
  8. What makes it so successful?
  9. What is the color scheme?

Part II: Brainstorm
You will use Adobe Illustrator to design a logo for yourself!
  1. Take a look at David Airey’s design process
  2. Then take a look at his sketch process
  3. Choose a social Issue
  4. Please list 24 words that you associate with helping, curing, or raising awareness of that social issue
    1. Use the brainstorm document
Part III: Sketch
  1. Select six words from your cure list.
  2. Design 9 different symbol logos that are a combo of the two words, please use the 9 logo design form.LogoWS1.jpg
  3. Select your top two designs and then elaborate, embellish, or simplify each design 4 different times on the Top Two Design form.LogoWS2.jpg
Part IV: Transfer to Digital

  1. Select your best design and begin to transfer it to a digital version.
  2. Scan in your design.
  3. Trace the graphite using a new layer in Illustrator
  4. Play with color and the stroke and perfect the logo.
  5. We will have a class critique and see if we can guess your social issue.
  6. Logo Design Critique for the class
    • What is your social cause that you are raising awareness to, can we guess it first before you tell us?
    • Please explain your process as to how you arrived at the logo
    • Class can ask questions and provide feedback.
  7. Upload the final logo to your wikipage with an artist statement that includes how what your social issue is, how you will cure/help/provide awareness and how you arrived at your final design.

Objectives:

  • Students will create a logo that symbolizes a false company/product that supports helping a social issue.
  • Students will create 17 thumbnail sketches
  • Students will brainstorm ideas
  • Students will complete a practice lesson on drawing with tools in Adobe Illustrator.
  • Students will use Adobe Illustrator to design and produce a logo for the same product or company.
